	welp, i'm back at school, doing this whole thing again. taking american jewish history, early republic, historical research, intro to film analysis, and oceanography. it should be a relatively busy semester. also vaguely considering the potential to go to law school after i finish my undergrad. i don't know

so far, so good. B+ in asian studies, pretty good considering i did almost nothing for her class. C in math, pretty fucking awesome, considering i failed two tests, and moreso because i won't need to retake it or anything. B in world at war, which i'm a little upset about, but not enough to make it a big deal. i accidentally left my citations in shorthand on my term paper, and didn't get all the IDs right on the final. i suppose a B is reasonable. No word from european history yet, but i should be hearing from them relatively soon.

mary's home, which is happy. we're leaving for london in less than 24 hours, which is super exciting. unless one of us is suddenly stricken by paralyzing illness in the next 18 hours or so, this is actually happening! super exciting!

otherwise, i don't have to go to christopher morley park, or see any of my coworkers for another like, 2 weeks. this is also exciting (though obviously less so than going to london.)

when i get back i start summer courses, elementary italian and astronomy lab exercises. pray for mojo. after those, i do poetry workshop and american history colonial to civil war, which is a significantly easier, and more fun session. then, come fall semester, i will be taking an early republic class, american jewish history, historical research, oceanography, intro to film and if i can get late registered, intermediate italian.

things look busy for the forseeable future, BUT LONDON TOMMOROW SO IT DOESN'T MATTER

Manhattan Starbucks Hit by Small Blast

A bomb blast outside a Starbucks coffee shop rattled the early morning Memorial Day quiet of Manhattan's Upper East Side today, shattering windows and triggering the evacuation of 25 apartments.

The coffee shop was closed when the bomb erupted at 3:25 a.m., and there were no reported injuries.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the first officers on the scene "found windows blown out of the Starbucks and the chair, the seat that is right outside, shattered." The time of day echoed that of a pattern of unsolved early morning blasts that have occurred outside the British Consulate, the Mexican Consulate and the Armed Forces recruiting booth in Times Square over the past two years.

final papers are all done and handed in. now begins the all-too-short process of studying for finals. In a little over a week mary and i will be leaving for london, which is exciting. when we get back i start summer school, which is not exciting.

hugh is out of jail, tiga refused bail. now evan is in jail, and its looking really bad for him. but i'm trying to stay positive for him.

life is a little strange these past few weeks, i have a lot of awesome stuff coming up, but lots of shitty stuff right now. its all a matter of trudging through the shit to get to the good stuff i guess. i get paid monday, then its only a few more bad things, then london, then mary's home all summer. just need to get through this.

i'm vaguely sick, and getting sicker by the day. i don't have days off to rest and get better. i'm starting to worry about next year, next semester, my research paper, my credit count, just about everything there is to worry about. i'm worrying about the papers i have to write for this semester, finals, math, etc. my mom is out of town, so watching boomer is all my responsibilty, so waking up at all hours of the night when i've finally fucking fallen asleep after trying so hard to sleep with a sore throat and stuffy nose, to let him out, then staying up and waiting for him to come back in so he doesn't wake the neighbors. on top of this, hugh and tiga were arrested a few days ago. hugh is one of the sweetest people and most dedicated activists i know. tiga, too, is an incredibly dedicated person, and also lived with me for something like 4 months. they're being accused of intimidation, property destruction, theft, and racketeering. so yeah, it's been a rough few days. hopefully some good news is on the horizon.

Having the most frustrating Hunter day ever. It starts in the Student Resource Center, with 30 minutes until my class, and a line out the door for the printer. I finally get to the last seat before the printer, and the two kids in front of me are collaborating to print out literally hundreds of pages of Powerpoint notes. I just need to print out my four page response paper for my Asian Studies course (which I don't want to take, but have to, thanks to Hunter's two year gen-ed setup) and get to class. I finally get to the printer, print my shit out, and get to class 5 minutes late, counting as a half-absence. So I'm sitting through my super boring Asian Studies class, with my unorganized adjunct professor when someone says what I will consider to be among the most ignorant things I've ever heard someone say. "I don't think Asian-Americans are assimilated into White American culture as much as African-Americans are, because there is a Black President, and there aren't any Asian-American politicians."

Now, I will not begin to punch holes in the implied correlation between politicians of a certain race, and their assimilation into White culture. And I certainly won't get into the statement that African-Americans are more assimilated into White culture. Instead, I will poke holes in the base of her argument. May I point you attention to:

PART II

Germany starts to build up its navy at an astonishing rate, causing Great Britain to become incredibly worried. This caused Great Britain to start producing even more battleships, and at a faster rate than Germany. This caused Germany to increase their speed of production, and so on and so forth until they were locked in a legitimate arms race. This competitive relationship, combined with the implied subtext of "I'm doing this because I'm afraid of why you're doing this" pretty much caused any civil relationship between Germany and Great Britain to all but disappear. Germany's super-scary growth also caused Great Britain to become allies with their age old rival, France.

The alliance also involved Russia, longtime trading partners of France. Russia had recently become suspicious of their neighbors to the west, and wished for some kind of informal alliance with France, so as to put more pressure on Germany not to freak out and do something crazy. They figured if Germany was surrounded on two sides by people who could, and would kill them, they would be less prone to do something stupid. This informal alliance became known as the entente (means agreement). Great Britain's role in the entente was even less formal, as they liked to pride themselves on "delightful neutrality." However, having even mentioned that they might be involved in this new alliance, Germany immediately assumed it to be official, giving them the name Triple Entente.
To make matters more confusing, and probably to continue copying Great Britain, Germany made moves to form the Triple Alliance, consisting of themselves, Austra-Hungary and Italy. This made the situation in Europe even more tense, as there was now the Triple Entente, whose sole purpose was to destroy Germany if they stepped out of line, and the Triple Alliance, whose purpose was to fight three of the strongest super-powers in the world. You could cut the pent up aggression with a fucking knife.
The last important thing to make note of is Germany's really poor military planning. By this point they had a massive military, but absolutely no idea what to do with it. Enter Alfred Von Schlieffen (don't bother trying to remember his name, nobody will care). This brilliant motherfucker comes up with the perfect plan for Germany to fight and win a two front war. In the event of Russia and France both showing military aggression against Germany, the Schlieffen Plan first would fully mobilize all of Germany's military resources against France, as France's military was able to mobilize far quicker. The attack on France would happen through the country between them, Belgium (remember this, it's very important). Schlieffen believed the full destruction of France would take three to four weeks, giving them just enough time to get all of their military back over to the eastern front to fight the massive attack from Russia. Again, this is not a typo or a mistake, this is seriously what the plan was. The only plan.
By the time the Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated, Europe is already just itching to blow itself up. Allegiances have been drawn, weapons prepared, militaries upgraded, the stage is basically set for a massive conflict, it was just waiting for a few more stupid decisions.

So now lets go to the place where this all starts, Bosnia. At this time its a province of Austria-Hungary, a big ass country with a really diverse population. The thing is, Austria-Hungary is super scared of these groups some day deciding they want to break free and form their own unified state for their people. They happen to be right in this fear, because the Slavic people want to do just that. That's where Serbia comes in (I know, there's lots of countries involved, this is the last one for a while, promise). Serbia is another new country, and they're just as ambitious as Germany, they want some new land. Their plan is to incorporate the Slavic people of Austria-Hungary into their country, taking away a sizable chunk of land with them. Obviously Austria-Hungary doesn't like this, and is just waiting for an excuse to obliterate Serbia for even thinking about it.
Meanwhile, Serbian nationalists are trying to speed up the process through various autonomous actions that really don't relate to the greater goal. Some Slavic-Bosnian students get word that the Archduke Franz Ferdinand (prince of Austria-Hungary, and heir to the throne) is going to be visiting Bosnia on an important Slavic Nationalist holiday. They don't like this and decide they want to kill him. Here's where it gets funny.
As Franz Ferdinand is driving down a street in Sarajevo in a big impressive parade, one of the students throws a bomb at his car. It bounces off the back and blows up the car behind him. The kid freaks out and takes his cyanide pill, which does not kill him, but rather induces vometting while he is beaten by police. It's like a Loony Tunes cartoon. Ferdinand delivers his speech in front of the town hall without interuption, then gets back in his car to visit the men injured in the car behind him. Meawhile, the student who planned the assassination is feeling pretty down about the failure, so he goes to buy a sandwich. He's leaving the deli when who happens to pass him by? The Archduke Franz Ferdinand! He runs up and shoots Ferdinand in the neck and his wife in the stomach. He too is caught by the authorities, as the Archduke and his Dutchess die in the back seat.

My First Attempt at Writing About History!

Sometime in the summer between highschool and college I made a really stupid mistake. Well, I'm sure I made tons, in fact I can think of a few offhand. Coming home high, that was a mistake. Letting Scott drive my car, that was a mistake. Driving barefoot, that too, turned out to be a mistake. One in particular held different esteem amongst my plethora of mistakes. On my way to a friends house, carelessly, I had been driving without a seatbelt. Luckily, I'm an excellent driver and did not crash my car and send myself crashing through the windshield and sailing off into the sunny summer streets. No, I got caught at a speed trap. I was going a normal speed, and the officer lifted her hand to wave me past, but mid-wave noticed my inadvertant lack of seatbelt. I was promptly pulled over and issued a ticket ranging somewhere around $50. This not only set me back $50, but assured that my college life would be interupted intermitently by court dates. The total cost between the ticket and the transit came to around $100. It was an immature decision to drive without a seatbelt, and because of this lapse of judgement, a series of avoidable circumstances transpired.
On June 28th, 1914, the Archduke Franz (Francis) Ferdinand was assassinated in the streets of Sarajevo by a gang of dumb kids who inadvertantly changed the world, and the face of global politics forever. But the kids were not the only ones who made a poor decision, what followed in the next month were a series of careless mistakes, all of which led to the bloodiest conflict Europe had seen in nearly a century. Like myself, and just about everyone else, the leaders of the Great Western Powers made bad decisions, and those led to entirely avoidable problems. (We, however, do not have the lives of millions of people in our hands..) So, how exactly did the assissination of an Austrian Prince in Bosnia result in soldiers from Germany and France killing one another in Belgium? Well, the story is actually pretty fucking stupid...

It all starts with Neo-colonialism. As we all well know, white guys have always had a talent for going to "new places" and deciding things belong to them, but that had taken a break for a little while. It was as though some section of concience had caught up with Europe and everyone let colonialism go. But in the early to mid 1800s the invention of steam propulsion, screw propellers, explosive shells and finally the 1884 invention of the machine gun gave white guys a whole new reason to kill brown people. It was like falling in love all over again. It seemed like everyone was expanding their empires, hell, even America was getting in on the fun, and they were hardly 100 years old! This new rise of white guys stealing land caused tons of friction between rival superpowers, and especially with the little baby newcomer Germany (they only became a real country in 1871). Having joined the game late, Germany was locked out of all of the cool stuff in Africa and Asia, making them super-angry.
That leads to a key issue, Germany being a bratty little kid. Germany says to the world in so many words "I've been a country for like, 40 years! I'm not sitting at the kids table anymore!" and with this they began to expand. The problem was, Germany was like two little rascals standing on one another's shoulders in a big coat. They looked like an adult, and were as tall as an adult, but in reality, they had no idea what the fuck they were doing or getting themselves into. With little idea of exactly how a country gets big and strong, they figured "hey, Great Britain seems to be doing a pretty killer job," and they were, being the rulers of roughly a quarter of the surface of the Earth. "Lets just copy what Great Britain is doing." So, mimicing their new mentors, Germany starts colonizing, but they only get a bunch of crap (as previously stated). With this terrible start, they decide to mimic the other thing Great Britain seemed to be doing well, controling shit in the water. In fact, it was Great Britain's policy at the time to have double the combined navies of the two largest standing navies below them. That's not a typo, they seriously did this. The thing is, Great Britain had a reason to do this, being an island surrounded on three sides by land, they were very vulnerable to attack from the sea. For such a giant super power, they also had a very small land army, meaning if someone penetrated their navy and managed to land on the island, they were fucked. You can see where this is going.
Germany starts to build up its navy at an astonishing rate, causing Great Britain to become incredibly worried. This caused Great Britain to start producing even more battleships, and at a faster rate than Germany. This caused Germany to increase their speed of production, and so on and so forth until they were locked in a legitimate arms race. This competitive relationship, combined with the implied subtext of "I'm doing this because I'm afraid of why you're doing this" pretty much caused any civil relationship between Germany and Great Britain to all but disappear. Germany's super-scary growth also caused Great Britain to become allies with their age old rival, France.

yesterday was my first day back to school. I'm having serious difficulty getting back into the swing of the commuter schedule, but it is also the first day. i'm sure it'll be fine by next week. i think maria goes in at the same time as me on tuesdays and fridays, so at least i'll have someone to keep me company on the train in.
so, for starters, asians in the us. it's a classroom full of asians, and like, 5 white kids there to fulfill their pluralism and diversity requirement. the teacher is a total mess, and i question if she has ever taught a class before. from the looks of the syllabus it's going to be very history heavy, which makes it more exciting for me.
next i had my 1500-1815 european history class, which i was already excited for, but apparently the professor who was supposed to teach it got sick and can't, so this new lady is teaching it. she's like, a million times cooler and more energetic than the other lady, so i'm really excited about that. it's also a smaller class, which is good.
next was math, which looks like a joke. i was really bad at math in highschool, and i was slightly worried as i've hardly done math since, but i feel confident on how i did on his diagnostic quiz, and i caught on to the stuff we were learning pretty quickly. granted, it's easy crap, but everyone else in the class didn't get the shit at all, so i don't know what to make of it.
finally i had world at war 1914-1950, which is the class i was most excited about, and now the one i am most worried about. the lecture period is absolutely PACKED, and its not even in one of our fabulous huge lecture halls. he have some of the biggest lecture halls in the city, and they have us packed in this shitty medium sized room where not everyone has seats. pissed. there is a discussion class breakoff group thing, and it is smaller, but what good is that gonna do if i can't even take notes in lecture cause i can't fucking sit down?

i'm so fucking ready for this day to end. once i'm done with this final i'm done with this fucking semester. i've been studying the past three days, i really hope i do well on this. i really only need to get a D in the class to get off academic probation, but i'd really like a C. Otherwise, i got a B+ in drawing, i think i can expect a B- from creative writing, and my journalism professor told me i could scrape a C+ if i hand in a few more things. he also invited me to a party at his apartment.

on a non school related note, i'm so fucking happy with my life right now. i kind of had this beautiful revelation during this awesome pipe organ song accompanied by crazy fire projection visuals at the winter solstice concert i went to with mary and some of her family. i feel like i'm really just like, doing the right thing, for once. not like, morally right, or whatever. just right. everything feels right. my relationship with my family, with mary, with my friends, i feel like everything is as it should be. i don't know, maybe i'm getting over excited, but so much shit in my life has been so fake for so long. i'm just glad things feel real for once.

also, i probably won't post again before the new year, so in advance, my new years resolution is to be on the deans list spring semester.

so it's 3 in the morning now, i'm fucking exhausted. i just finished my response papers for my political science class, now i'm taking a break before i start studying for journalism. i really wish i hadn't procrastinated so much.
i'm basically a hop skip and jump away from getting kicked out of college, i basically am left begging for mercy from my professors, to bump my final grades up like, half a letter so i don't get kicked out of school. how the fuck did i get here? this is such a mess
my journalism professor is probably going to give me a C or C+ he told me, hopefully my drawing professor will hook me up with a B or B-, i'm going to beg my creative writing professor to give me a C (even though i'm not entirely sure i'm doing poorly in her class), and then it really all rests on me killing on the polisci final. guess i'm gonna have to actually study for this.
i really need to commit to taking school more seriously next semester (assuming i don't get kicked out this semester). hopefully i can get myself organized and on the right track, now that i'm settled into my new atmosphere/life. i feel like i say this to myself every semester, but i think this time i mean it. i think i got off to a bad start this semester what with messy break up and hanging out and getting high with john all the time. after that it just set a precedent for me to not do anything. i think i need to go back on add medication or something.
